The 2012 meme

hawthornowl: A cute bunny! (Default)
A rare meme from me. Stolen from [personal profile] eliki who stole it from [personal profile] loganberrybunny. :)

1. What did you do in 2012 that you'd never done before?
So many things! The biggest is moving out of my parents' house, which of course comes with a whole load of new things that I'd never done before. If you want really boring work related stuff, I went to PHPConference London, learned Zend Framework 2, Backbone.js, Twig, and don't think I can't hear you snoring there

2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I refuse to make resolutions, as I place no significance in arbitrary time boundaries.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope!

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Nope!

5. What countries did you visit?
Worcesterland.

6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012?
A well thought out holiday.

7. What date from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory?
21st December 2012, of course. The Day of Smugness. :)

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Finally taking a huge step in battling my OCD, and posting an account of my experiences. Second to that would be getting my own place.

9. What was your biggest failure?
I spent a lot of time writing some web functionality for our biggest client, and it's never worked right, and is a total pain to set up and use.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
No, but I did properly choke on a Subway sandwich (as in, a bit of lettuce went down my windpipe). Not pleasant at all. Naturally, this happened on a train platform in front of hundreds of people, which wasn't mortifying at all.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
My new laptop! After three years of Windows Vista and awful Intel graphics, I have a machine that can run Minecraft!

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
President Obama. Dozens of innocent children are murdered, and his response is 'We need to stop this from happening'. And there are actually people opposing him. I really hate politics.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?

14. Where did most of your money go?
Probably train tickets.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The Hobbit (which I should get a move on and see!). Also, the season 3 premiere of MLP, because it was probably the first big moment I ever shared with a fandom. I watched it live, and it was most satisfying.

16. What song/album will always remind you of 2012?
I don't tend to remember years by their numbers, but it would be 'Paradise' by Coldplay. Blame the Olympics for that. Seriously, it is one of the most glorious songs I've ever heard.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

a. Happier or sadder?
Much, much happier. 2012 is the year my life really came back together since my nervous breakdown in 2003.

b. Thinner or fatter?
Look, I moved to a town with three McDonalds restaurants, okay?

c. Richer or poorer?
Quite a bit richer, although I try not to look too closely at my finances.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Drawing.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Using Windows 8. I used it for 15 minutes, and that was a quarter of an hour too long.

See, my dad got a Windows 8 laptop for his birthday, and naturally I popped round to help set it up. Now I'm a web developer. I have some passing experience with interface design. I use computers (and Windows) all the time. And I couldn't figure out how to use Windows 8. How the heck do my parents even stand a chance? Great design there, Microsoft.

20. How will you be spending/did you spend Christmas?
I had a nice dinner with my family.

21. Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?
My flatmate, although I barely use my phone.

22. Did you fall in love in 2012?
I fell in love with an animated show about ponies, if that counts...

23. How many one night stands in this last year?
For me, none, but I did read about one.

24. What was your favourite TV programme?
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. As if you had to ask. :)

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Nope.

26. What was the best book(s) you read?
Well, I re-read Watership Down so technically that, but that's unfair. Frost Dancers by Garry Kilworth is the next best contender.

I also read the entire Animorphs series, which was a total blast from the past. As a child, I adored Animorphs. It's one of the things that put me on the path to becoming a furry, and it was just so... claustrophobic. I wouldn't say it was dark, but there was just so much tension in it. It's one of those rare children's series that takes you way outside of the usual comfort zone of children's stories. Surprisingly adult at times as well - there's no well-defined good vs evil - some of the bad guys are good, some of the good guys are bad, nobody knows exactly who can be trusted. Also, the main characters can turn into animals and one of them is permanently trapped in the body of a red-tailed hawk. Did I mention that?

If you never read Animorphs, I highly recommend it. The books are an easy read, but some parts will stay with you forever. If you did read Animorphs and loved it as much as me, you might be interested to know that there's a review series on Youtube

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
...dubstep?

28. What did you want and get?
An awesome laptop.

29. What did you want and not get?
An awesome Applejack episode.

30. What were your favourite films of this year?
Skyfall. I'm no Bond fan (this is only the second Bond film I've seen), but it was very good.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Thirty. My parents took me out for dinner.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Season 3 of MLP being 26 episodes long.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012?
A crime against fabulosity.

34. What kept you sane?
Me. I'm very good at it.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Romance isn't my thing. If you asked me who I liked the most, I'd say... Brenda Crichlow, voice of Zecora. I listened to Everfree Radio's interview with her, which was interesting, as she'd had little experience of the brony fandom and most of what was being discussed was a surprise to her. The host suggested that she make an appearance at a con some time, and sure enough, a few months later, she turned up at Equestria LA. She was so warm and accepting, it was very nice to watch and hear her experiences of the fandom.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
I don't get involved in politics, but the gay marriage thing. Seriously, you've got Christians and Muslims arguing that they're being discriminated against by not being allowed to discriminate against gay people. Religion really is poison for the mind. Ann Widdecombe is an ostensibly intelligent lady, and she's forced to argue for the most horrid nonsense because a magic book is telling her to.

37. Who did you miss?
Terry Wogan. Graham Norton just isn't the same.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
In real life: Loganberry! I met him in Worcesester, and he's awesome, but I already knew that. :)

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012.
Don't assume that a banker's draft is something that you can just go to the bank and ask for over the counter. Apparently you have to order it in advance or something. I nearly didn't get my flat because of this.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year?
making tacky jelly
put it on your head
we're gonna win the race
BECAUSE I AM A GOOD RACER

Hi everyone!

So, LiveJournal has been down for a few days now. I've been considering moving to Dreamwidth for a while, so I finally decided to register an account and hop on here. So far, I'm really liking what I've seen.

Dreamwidth is based on the Livejournal engine, so everything is pretty familiar, but there's so much more customisation, nothing is hidden, and everything is explained nicely - the site seems to be very open about how everything works, and I like that. I'm going to give it a try for a little while.
